BEYOND THE BURGER: 10 Great Ways to Use Ground Beef

Stuck in a burger rut?

Go beyond the burger – and enjoy the convenience, versatility and great value of ground beef every week – with these 10 ideas:

Meatloaf: Mix 1 ½ pounds of ground beef with an egg, chopped onion, a cup each of milk and breadcrumbs, and form into a loaf. Season to taste, top with ketchup sweetened with a spoonful of brown sugar and bake!

Picadillo: Prepared in a skillet, this stew-like dish that’s popular in Spain and Latin America is typically made with ground beef, tomatoes, raisins and olives.

Meatballs: Homemade meatballs – with breadcrumbs, onions, egg and spices mixed in – are great on a sub roll with cheese or with spaghetti and marinara.

Pasta Bolognese:  Simmer ground beef with pork, pancetta, canned tomatoes and spices for a traditional Italian meat sauce to serve over pasta.

Kibbeh: These fried croquettes start with a paste of ground beef, bulgur and minced onions, which is formed into balls and filled with ground beef, pine nuts and Middle Eastern spices.

Stromboli: Roll out prepared pizza dough into a rectangle, spread with cooked ground beef and cheese, roll up, bake and dip slices into marinara sauce.

Sloppy Joes: Serve this sweet-and-tangy ground beef dish, combined with peppers, onions, ketchup, brown sugar and spices, on a buttered, crusty roll.

Tacos: Turn your kitchen into a Mexican fiesta with make-your-own tacos, including spiced ground beef, guacamole, shredded cheese, lettuce and fresh salsa.

Shepherd’s Pie: Make this traditional English dish with ground beef instead of lamb! Saute beef with veggies and spices and bake in a pie dish, topped with mashed potatoes.

Hand Pies: Brown ground beef with onions, garlic, Worcestershire and Dijon mustard. Arrange the mixture on top of squares of puffed pastry, fold into triangles, brush with egg and bake.
