Our Tres Leches Cake, also known as pan tres leches or “three milks bread,” is a Latin American specialty. This moist sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk and heavy cream.
While it is believed that this might have been created in Mexico, the concept of a cake being soaked in liquid likely began with British Trifles in medieval Europe and Italian tiramisu. This idea made it to Mexico as early as the 19th century.
Our Bakery’s light sponge cake is made with egg whites whipped to soft peaks to give it its airy feel. Then the three milks are blended together and poured over the cake. So, that explains why the cake you buy in the store has a pool of milk on top!
The cake is then topped with sweetened whipped cream and garnished with berries, for a special Cinco de Mayo or to cap off any celebration.
