Your Guide to Salmon Varieties

FEATURED ITEM: Your Guide to Salmon Varieties

Full of protein and versatile, salmon is a great choice for summer grilling. High in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and more, this fish also packs a nutritional punch at any meal.

Here is your guide to the  varieties of this popular fish in our seafood department:

Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon

From our seafood partner, Foley Fish, we bring you the highest quality, firmest textured, freshest and most flavorful Atlantic salmon available.

There are four major factors that differentiate one Farm Raised Atlantic Salmon from another: gene pools, farming practices, harvesting and slaughtering techniques and the packing and travel time of the finished product.

Foley pays attention to detail every step of the way, from the hatchery to the final shipping of the product, ensuring high quality, delicious salmon that was swimming the day before it was shipped to our stores. In addition, the farms that deliver to Foley test their salmon regularly for PCBs to ensure the healthfulness of each fish.

Wild Coho Salmon

Also known as silver salmon or “silvers,” Wild Coho Salmon is a meaty, healthful and impressive dinner on the center of your family’s dinner plate. Caught in the waters of Alaska, it has a moderate to high amount of fat – the healthy omega-3 kind – and is known for its deep orange flesh.

Cook it medium rare to highlight its texture. Sear it in a pan with some oil or toss it on the grill. On the grill, the fat content keeps it moist. And pay attention! Wild salmon cooks quickly. Most recipes suggest cooking it for 8 to 10 minutes per inch of thickness.

Copper River King Salmon

The first of the season salmon from Alaskan waters, Copper River King Salmon is available now for a limited time!

And there’s a reason this salmon bears the name “King.” This special breed is known for its robust size and superlative flavor, due to an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids.

Find Copper River King Salmon for a limited time in-season at select Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms locations.

Select from whole filets, individual boneless portions and, for some varieties, steaks.
