Traditional American Chop Suey is the definition of classic New England comfort food. If you’re not originally from around here, you might recall something called American Goulash, Chili Mac or Hamburger Mac and you’d be talking about the same thing!
This dish consists of elbow macaroni combined with ground beef, sautéed onions and green peppers, and Italian spices in a slow-simmered tomato sauce. Similar to Hamburger Helper, it’s cooked in a frying pan or sauté pan, not baked in the oven. While the dish has clear Italian-American elements, it’s called “American Chop Suey” because the exact mélange of meat, vegetables and Italian seasonings can be a bit variable.
At Roche Bros., we make American Chop Suey the traditional way and then offer it in 1-pound packages. It’s dinner, the way you remember it from childhood. Add some grated Parmesan or a little Worcestershire sauce and serve it with crusty Italian bread from our bakery!
