SmartHarvest Hydroponic Lettuce

We’re running a small pilot that could be a part of something really big! Roche Bros. has introduced SmartHarvest Bistro Blend hydroponic lettuce – now available in our Wellesley store and at Brothers Marketplace in Weston. Grown locally at Volante Farms in Needham using innovative retrofit shipping containers, SmartHarvest Hydroponic Lettuce offers an environmentally friendly, non-GMO, pesticide free product that is tender and bursting with flavor!
How does the lettuce go from container to table? Everything starts with the SmartHarvest container. Custom built from retired shipping containers (saving them from the junkyard), the folks at AquaHarvest build a special growing unit that allows for precise control of 20 different variables affecting the final product – from the exact amount of water to the right spectrum of light and balance of nutrients. Growing in these controlled environments can save 90% of the water that traditional methods would require, and allows the lettuce to grow without need for any pesticides or GMOs. Growing in vertical layers reduces the land footprint required by a whopping 97%. And housing these containers at Volante Farms in Needham means the hyper-local product saves thousands of miles of transportation costs and impact.
Bottom line, not only does SmartHarvest Lettuce taste delicious, it is a fresher, higher quality offering that gets to you faster with huge environmental savings. Learn more at the Aqua Harvest website, and let us know what you think by leaving a comment below!
