Meet the Farmers
The Shuman Farms family-owned legacy began in the mid-1980s with a small family farm in Reidsville, GA. Today, they’re a grower and shipper of sweet onions and headquartered in the center of the Vidalia® growing region. President and CEO John Shuman partners with industry-leading Vidalia growers to bring only the best sweet onions to market. To John and his family, it has always been about more than just onions. Named 2020 Grower of the Year by the Vidalia Onion Committee in recognition of Shuman Farms’ contribution to the industry for more than 30 years, John Shuman strives to positively impact communities while delivering products to consumers that they’re proud of.
While Vidalia Onion availability ranges from mid-April to late August, Shuman Farms ensures customers get the best-tasting, highest-quality sweet onions all year long. They grow Vidalia Onions in the sandy soils of southeast Georgia in peak season and the bountiful growing regions in Texas, Mexico and Peru. To provide you with the best-tasting onions, John Shuman and his team follow a meticulous process. Here’s how they transform delicate seeds into nutritious, delicious, sweet Vidalia Onions:

Creative Ways to Store Your Vidalia Onions & Make Them Last
Keep this kitchen staple fresh with these quick tips!
- The best way to preserve sweet onions and to prevent bruising is to store them separately in a cool, dry place.
- Wrap sweet onions separately in paper towels or newspaper and store in the refrigerator.
- Store sweet onions in the legs of clean, sheer pantyhose by tying a knot between each onion and hanging in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Cut above the knot to use an onion.
- Place sweet onions on elevated racks or screens in a cool, dry place with good airflow and be sure they aren’t touching.
